NSIC TRANSLATIONS OF OUR MEASURES
We support and highly encourage the translation of outcome measures produced at NSIC into your language.
We ask anyone interested in translating our measures to follow the below translation methodology, so we can formally validate your translation
(1) Which measure will you be translating?
Please read more about our measures; the ADAPSS and ADAPSS-short form, and SMS-NAC, to determine if these are the most appropriate measures for your intended purpose.
(2) Does a translation in your language already exist, or already being worked on?
(3) Contact us to let us know the measure you plan to translate, and into which language
Please use bht.nsicresearchpsychology@nhs.net , and give the email subject "Translation of [measure] into [language]"
(4) Please identify a translation methodology you will use
We strongly recommend those which allow for a 'conceptual' translation over a 'literal' translation, as some of the measurement items may be [derived from meaning rather than literalness?].
The World Health Organisation translation methodology guidance is recommended and attached here.
(5) The English version of the measures should be the index version from which translations take place.
(6) Translate the measure into the local language by at least two native speakers of the language who are familiar with the psychological constructs of the measure.
(7) Make item-level and administration-level notes and identify/resolve disagreements between translators.
Seek third review by NSIC if applicable at bht.nsicresearchpsychology@nhs.net.
(8) Once an initial translation is produced, conduct pilot validation (e.g. by cognitive interviews) of the measures with an appropriate representative; usually a personal with lived experience of a spinal cord injury.
(9) Adjust the translated measure as indicated and repeat procedure 7, 8 and 9 until no further changes are made.
(10) When a final local version has been reached, please inform NSIC at bht.nsicresearchpsychology@nhs.net
We will update our list of approved measures with your version, which will include the contact details of a named representative from your team who will be the point of contact for anyone wanting to download a copy of this measure.
