Ophthalmology Research
Every day in the UK 250 people start to lose their sight & one in five people will live with sight loss in their lifetime (DAE, 2017)
The direct healthcare cost linked to eye health is estimated to be at least £3 billion every year. This includes NHS healthcare expenditure (Pezzullo et al, 2016)
The ophthalmology research department is running a number of different studies looking at:
- The efficacy & cost-effectiveness of currently available treatments
- The effectiveness of potential new treatments
- The long-term effects of eye conditions & their treatments on quality of life
- The most effective way of detecting early changes in the eye
